Position – Technical Director
Time Served – 14 Years’
Carl Says: Prior to working with GMS, i completed a Mechanical Engineering NVQ 3 at Wigan & Leigh College whilst working with a local heating and mechanical company.
This led to a move into commercial HVAC for a short period of 2 years when I worked for a company called Tudor North West.
I joined GMS in 2005 when my Farther-In-Law (Howard Parry) and I discussed launching of a self delivered mechanical division within GMS. The company had 6 employees when i first joined. The staffing levels increased rapidly following the company successfully winning multiple council contracts in the NW of England to deliver Legionella related services.
I became contract manager within a year of joining the business. As it was a fast growing company, it needed more layers to it’s structure. I was only 22 years’ of age and had the job of running a large commercial contract that involved the delivery of over 1000 risk assessments each calendar year, over a 4 year period. It certainly was a baptism of fire. However, the contract was successfully delivered and provided me with some great experience of managing staff, dealing directly with major clients and delivery demanding KPIs. Those 4 years’ were vital to my development in the water industry,
Moving forward to present day – I am currently responsible for managing contract teams and overseeing contracts, clients and the general day to day business. As a company of 23+ employees, it is a fast pace environment and with the company growing at the pace it has over the past 3 to 4 years, the focus needs to remain on ensuring that standards are being kept to the levels we have set over the 25 years of business.
We now provide a national service. This is the most challenging move the company has made to date. We have been providing contractual works throughout the UK for a few years now. This has gone really well and i am proud of the effort and management of this by the management teams and field staff who are delivering a fantastic service to our growing client base.
Having spend a period away from GMS between 2010 and 2013, I have seen 1st hand how GMS are providing an elite service compared to general industry standards. I am committed to ensure that this stays the same and that GMS keep striving to improve further and uphold our reputation as an organisation that does things the right way.
Last but not least, our staff…. They are what we are. Without them we cannot do what we do. We have a fabulous team at present, and we want to ensure that they know they are appreciated by investing in them and providing them with an environment that they can strive in. We have added new training programmes over the last 3 years that ensure that all staff are kept up to date with the latest training and qualifications. We also invested in a new Health & Safety package that keeps them up to date and refreshed at all times with relevant knowledge to keep them safe at work. We always want to promote from within. Our staff know that any company growth will potentially open a door for them to climb the ladder. It is a team game and we always move forward together!
