Water disinfection is required to ensure water is clean, hygienic and fit for purpose. Preventing the proliferation of bacteria, such as legionella, is key to ensuring safety while combatting system fouling that can lead to corrosion, leaks and inefficiencies in associated HVAC.

When should I clean and disinfect my water system?

  • When newly installed or following refurbishment of a water system
  • Following modification work to water system
  • Following periods of little use such of the water system
  • Following adverse water sample results
  • If there is a case of legionnaires’ disease associated to the water system
  • Following a legionella risk assessment if cleaning is recommended
  • Following tank inspections reporting contamination.

Water tanks should be regularly inspected and cleaned as required. Failure to do this can result in the tank conditions deteriorating:

Your tank should be kept as clean as possible:

What the British Standards say:

BS 8558:2015, a British Standard, offers guidance on the design, installation, commissioning, and maintenance of water supply systems in buildings, including storage cisterns for drinking water. It stresses the importance of regular inspection and, where necessary, cleaning and disinfection to maintain water quality. Cisterns should be inspected at least annually and cleaned or disinfected if there is evidence of contamination, stagnation, or after major works. Microbiological testing should be carried out based on risk assessment and system use, rather than on a fixed six-month interval.
