Legionella concerns keep Gloucester Sports Pavilion Closed

There is growing frustration over the continued closure of the sports pavilion at a popular playing field in Gloucester and now concerns have been raised over legionella risk at the site. The sports pavilion situated at King George V Playing Field (KGV) in Hucclecote was closed when the coronavirus lockdown came into effect in March 2020.

Councillor David Brown (LD, Hucclecote) says there have been numerous requests for Gloucester City Council to reopen the changing rooms and toilet facilities but almost three years later they remain closed. He called on council chiefs on January 26 to “inject some urgency” into getting the issue solved.

“Various sports clubs rent football and cricket pitches on KGV but are frustrated that this pavilion, which includes toilets and changing facilities, remains barred to them. We’ve waited three years for this facility to be made available to read it is due to various operational hurdles.

“Can you inject some urgency into this and perhaps get a short timescale on when that will be done.”

He told the council he understood the changing facilities had been closed due to the presence of legionella at the site, he told the meeting. The bacteria can cause Legionnaires’ disease which is a lung infection people can get from inhaling droplets of water from things like air conditioning or hot tubs.
